The Origin of Gibraltar's Coat of Arms
Gibraltar was finally taken from the Moors in 1462 during the 8th Siege, by the Duke of Medina Sidonia. King Henry IV of Castille declared it Crown property.
Henry IV is supposed to have given Gibraltar a grant of Arms consisting of a gold key hanging from a red castle.
In 1467 (the 9th Siege), Gibraltar was taken by the Duke of Medina Sidonia for his own possession and it was not until 1502 that it returned to the control of the Spanish Crown.
On July 10th 1502, the King and Queen of Spain (Fernando and Isabel - los Reyes Catolicos) granted Gibraltar a Coat of Arms. Although many other versions have been produced,.that granted by Queen Isabel has remained the accepted, or popular, version.
