A VERY BRIEF HISTORY OF
THE ROYAL GIBRALTAR REGIMENT
Badge of the
Gibraltar Defence Force
In 1727, during the 13th Siege of Gibraltar, a number of the Genoese civilian residents of Gibraltar took up arms and helped in the defence of the Rock by manning various guardposts. They were known as The Genoese Guard.
During the First World War (1914-1918), some Gibraltarian citizens formed the Gibraltar Volunteer Corps to help the British Forces on the Rock.
During the Second World War (1939-1945), civilians working with various units of the British Army in Gibraltar came together to form the Gibraltar Defence Force (GDF).
In 1958, the Gibraltar Defence Force became the Gibraltar Regiment.
In 1971, the Gibraltar Regiment received its Colours (Regimental flags granted by Her Majesty the Queen) and also received the Freedom of the City of Gibraltar.
In 1999, the title of the Gibraltar Regiment was changed to the Royal Gibraltar Regiment.

My thanks to the Royal Gibraltar Regiment for permission to use the Regimental logo.
